Genres are relevent to audiences becuase  it helps them choose a film when they go to the cinema or pick a dvd. I love horror films so if I know I am seeing a horror film then I will have an expectation which is to get scared. If I get scared then that expectation has been suceeded therefore I come away happy. Because I know its  a horror film it means I will look for things like something jumping out of you. If I did not know it was a horror film then I would not be waitng for anything therefore I would not get the whole satisfaction.

Genres and production company- Genres help production companies find the right cast for a movie. If a musical was being cast the production company will probably look at other musicals and maybe select a well known musical actor for the role. Some actors will be cast in certain genres like Jim Carrey normally stars in comedies. Because he is known for comedies it means production companies who may be looking for a lead to star in a comedy can cast him without an audition because they know he is funny because they have seen him in other comedies and know that is his specialty.
Equally some directors stick to the same genre which means production companies know which directors are best suited therefore when they come to get a director they can rule off any directors that don't direct the movie genre that they are casting for.

Distribution- Targeting a film is a huge part of a film. If a comedy is coming out then they will want to push the fact that it is a comedy in the trailer or poster so that comedy lovers will come and watch it. If horror film trailer does not show the fact that this is a horror film then horror fans will not see the movie. Equally someone might go and see that film but not be aware it is a horror and be disappointed because they thought it would be something different. If distribution companies understand more clearly who they are selling to (because there is an existing fan base for that genre) then it is easier for them to target the film.

Genre means type of film or style of film. Some different types of genres are-

Comedy,horror,sci-fi,thriller,western etc.

Three different things that you might see in a type of genre is the same kind of characters, same kind of narrative and same mise en scene. Thriller films are different form other genres because they can all be very different. The characters are can be very diffident or the mise en scene can be different.

These two films are both thrillers but they are both very different from each other. One is set in the future in space which is about a group of people finding the orgins of earth. On the other side you have snakes on a plane which is set in the present day. Snakes on a plane has snakes which are the threat where as aliens are the threat in Prometheus. The mise en scene is very different in both films.

Prometheus- Alien, Space ship and characters- astronauts, scientist and alien.

Snakes on plane- criminals, everyday people and snakes.

other genres tend to be relatively the same.



Friends with benefits and no strings attached are both romantic comedy's and they are very similar.
They both follow the same story lines - friends who sleep together then fall out but ends with them getting together. The posters even have the same colours.

Thrillers are very varied unlike sci-fi for example which normally uses space for location and has some kind of aliens.

Within a thriller you have a sub genre. Within the sub genre there are similarity's for example a thriller evokes an emotional response from the audience using suspense.
One thing thrillers have in common is something being threatened, something posing as a threat and someone stopping the threat. For example in these three thriller posters we see three different people are looking like they mean business. they all look tough and we wan clearly see their emotions because it is a close up on their face. The man in the grey has a cut on his check and in skyfall he is holding a gun which suggests both films will be violent. salt may appear to females and males because she is a female lead and she is also very good looking as is Liam Neeson and Daniel Craig.

Filming our Prelim.

We were given a script which we had to follow but we could interrupt the script in any way we liked. We decided to set our scene outside with a girl tied up. We then had two other people [one holding a gun] standing either side of the girl tied up and they were fighting over who would kill her.

One problem we had was filming outside. One problem with filming outside was the light change, which meant different scenes looked slightly different. If we had filmed inside we would not have had that problem. Another problem was everyday sounds outside. We were filming our last shot and suddenly in the background we could here a leaf blower which means we will have a problem with continuity. We overcomplicated the scene by having props which were unnecessary. We spent about 15 minutes getting the props ready which in the end we did not use. This meant we wasted time rather than getting creative shoots. A rule I have learnt is overdoing a scene is not a good idea. Some of the bets films are very simple in the way they are filmed. One of the actors did not know their lines which meant we had to stop start the filming process therefore another thing I have learnt is always be prepared.

My job in this task was filming which I loved. When we started I got everybody in position and made sure what was meant to be in shot was in shot. I zoomed in and focused on who ever was the furthest away from the camera which meant everyone else was in focus. We did one creative shot of the girl tied up. We did a tilt shot which started at her feet and finished on her face but it was probably a bit to slow so I will have to speed it up when we come to edit it. I thought this was a good shot because it set the scene. Over all I thought our scenes were good. We got some nice shots and we had convincing characters.
