In today’s lesson we were editing our prelim on final cut pro. The first thing we learnt was bins. This is a folder in which you Put all your footage in so that if you deleted your footage you would Have a back up due to the bin. This bin is called fresher. The second bin we learnt was a login bin. You put all the footage you know you are going to use in this. Bins are very helpful because it keeps you organised. If you did not use your bins then you would have footage all over the place and it would become very confusing. Once we had done that with our footage we started editing. You have to screens on final cut pro. One screen plays back what is in your timeline(this is your edited footage)and the other screen plays back any footage from your bins. To get the footage you want into the timeline you double click on the footage you want from your login bin. This footage will come up in the right hand screen. Click the screen and drag over to the timeline and this will put that footage in the timeline. To cut a clip in the timeline to put your mouse at the end of the clip untill two arrows facing opposite directions come up. Once this comes up click and drag backwards. The problem we had with our editing was the outside noise in our film. Because we filmed outside we had different noises in different scenes. To fix this we copied the soundtrack of the outside noise from one of the clips and pasted this over the whole film so that we had a contionous outside noise through it.

Genres are relevent to audiences becuase  it helps them choose a film when they go to the cinema or pick a dvd. I love horror films so if I know I am seeing a horror film then I will have an expectation which is to get scared. If I get scared then that expectation has been suceeded therefore I come away happy. Because I know its  a horror film it means I will look for things like something jumping out of you. If I did not know it was a horror film then I would not be waitng for anything therefore I would not get the whole satisfaction.

Genres and production company- Genres help production companies find the right cast for a movie. If a musical was being cast the production company will probably look at other musicals and maybe select a well known musical actor for the role. Some actors will be cast in certain genres like Jim Carrey normally stars in comedies. Because he is known for comedies it means production companies who may be looking for a lead to star in a comedy can cast him without an audition because they know he is funny because they have seen him in other comedies and know that is his specialty.
Equally some directors stick to the same genre which means production companies know which directors are best suited therefore when they come to get a director they can rule off any directors that don't direct the movie genre that they are casting for.

Distribution- Targeting a film is a huge part of a film. If a comedy is coming out then they will want to push the fact that it is a comedy in the trailer or poster so that comedy lovers will come and watch it. If horror film trailer does not show the fact that this is a horror film then horror fans will not see the movie. Equally someone might go and see that film but not be aware it is a horror and be disappointed because they thought it would be something different. If distribution companies understand more clearly who they are selling to (because there is an existing fan base for that genre) then it is easier for them to target the film.
Genre means type of film or style of film. Some different types of genres are-
Comedy,horror,sci-fi,thriller,western etc.
Three different things that you might see in a type of genre is the same kind of characters, same kind of narrative and same mise en scene. Thriller films are different form other genres because they can all be very different. The characters are can be very diffident or the mise en scene can be different.
These two films are both thrillers but they are both very different from each other. One is set in the future in space which is about a group of people finding the orgins of earth. On the other side you have snakes on a plane which is set in the present day. Snakes on a plane has snakes which are the threat where as aliens are the threat in Prometheus. The mise en scene is very different in both films.
Prometheus- Alien, Space ship and characters- astronauts, scientist and alien.
Snakes on plane- criminals, everyday people and snakes.

other genres tend to be relatively the same.

Friends with benefits and no strings attached are both romantic comedy's and they are very similar.
They both follow the same story lines - friends who sleep together then fall out but ends with them getting together. The posters even have the same colours.

Thrillers are very varied unlike sci-fi for example which normally uses space for location and has some kind of aliens.

Within a thriller you have a sub genre. Within the sub genre there are similarity's for example a thriller evokes an emotional response from the audience using suspense.
One thing thrillers have in common is something being threatened, something posing as a threat and someone stopping the threat. For example in these three thriller posters we see three different people are looking like they mean business. they all look tough and we wan clearly see their emotions because it is a close up on their face. The man in the grey has a cut on his check and in skyfall he is holding a gun which suggests both films will be violent. salt may appear to females and males because she is a female lead and she is also very good looking as is Liam Neeson and Daniel Craig.

Here are some different sub genres-
action thriller
conspiracy thriller
crime thriller
disaster thriller
erotic thriller
legal thriller
medical thriller
psychological thriller
political thriller
spy thriller
supernatural thriller
horror thriller

When we do our thrillers i would love to do a horror thriller because i love horror films.

Filming our Prelim.

We were given a script which we had to follow but we could interrupt the script in any way we liked. We decided to set our scene outside with a girl tied up. We then had two other people [one holding a gun] standing either side of the girl tied up and they were fighting over who would kill her.

One problem we had was filming outside. One problem with filming outside was the light change, which meant different scenes looked slightly different. If we had filmed inside we would not have had that problem. Another problem was everyday sounds outside. We were filming our last shot and suddenly in the background we could here a leaf blower which means we will have a problem with continuity. We overcomplicated the scene by having props which were unnecessary. We spent about 15 minutes getting the props ready which in the end we did not use. This meant we wasted time rather than getting creative shoots. A rule I have learnt is overdoing a scene is not a good idea. Some of the bets films are very simple in the way they are filmed. One of the actors did not know their lines which meant we had to stop start the filming process therefore another thing I have learnt is always be prepared.

My job in this task was filming which I loved. When we started I got everybody in position and made sure what was meant to be in shot was in shot. I zoomed in and focused on who ever was the furthest away from the camera which meant everyone else was in focus. We did one creative shot of the girl tied up. We did a tilt shot which started at her feet and finished on her face but it was probably a bit to slow so I will have to speed it up when we come to edit it. I thought this was a good shot because it set the scene. Over all I thought our scenes were good. We got some nice shots and we had convincing characters.

Hi, my name is Ned Wakeley and this is my first blog. I am sixteen years old and live in a village outside Stratford-upon-avon. I am a huge fan of films and want to get into the film industry. My favorite film is 'The secret life of bees'.
This ia a PowerPoint I made on the film submerged. We analyzed the mise en scene as well as the camera shots. We also analyzed the Characters.

CAMERA SHOTS

Today we were talking about film shots and a few people who are involved.

A sequence is a series of shots cut together to make it look like it is all happening at once. This is also known as continous motion. When filming a shot you should shoot the scene in a few ways. For example you should use a close up, a median shot and a wide shot to make the scene more interesting.

First of all you should zoom in on your subject or actor and focus the lens so that when you zoom in out the actor or subject does not go blurry.
film terminology-

Standby- this means everyone is ready to shoot. Each member of a film crew will shout this out to let the director know they are all set.

Turnover- this means they have started to record whats ever being shot.

Action- this means GO! It signals the actors and extras and begins a scene.

Cut- means stop filming. One trick is to never delete a shot even when it went wrong because it may come in handy. Also carry on filming right up till the end of the scene so you don't miss anything.
For example a man may pick up a bag and walk off with it but at the end of the scene he will put it back from where he got so that it is there if they do the scene again. Later on in the day they may film that person walking down the street and they may forget he is carrying a bag. This will look strange in the movie because the person will pick up the bag and then walk away without it! BUT remember when they were shooting the man picking up the bag, they left the camera recording which picked up the man putting down the bag.
This means they can show the man picking up the bag then putting back the bag and then have the shot of him walking away WITHOUT the bag.

Continuity- this is a job given to someone with a good eye. There job is to make sure all props and costumes are the same within the same scene. Lets say a party scene  is being filmed and in the scene a women is wearing a necklace. They may stop filming for lunch and then carry on with the party scene afterwards. The actress wearing the necklace in the scene may take it off for lunch and forget to put it back on. When they start filming again the lady won't have the necklace. This will look odd in the movie because one moment the character will be wearing a necklace and then the next she is not. It is up to continuity to make sure mistakes like that do not happen.

In a scene actors have to move around and stop. Markers are put on the ground to show an actor where to stop. The marker is usually a blue cross.

180 degree rule (crossing the line)- You imagine there is a line between the two characters talking. The camera can shoot anywhere on that line but it can not cross the line otherwise it will look like the characters are facing the opposite way. If the camera does cross the line then this is referred to as crossing the line.

Rule of 3- if you split the camera shot into thirds this can help with placement of a character. The top right hand corner is the hot spot. Next it is the top left, then bottom right then bottom left. You should try and fill up the hot spots to make a shot look interesting, making sure you main actor or object is in the main hot spot.

first blog

Hi my name is Ned Wakeley and i am currently studying media at school and this is my first blog.

In media last week we were looking at the functions of a film camera. I have used a camera before for when i made a film trailer. The camera i used was a filp which was very easy to use.

The red button on the camera lets you record and stop recording. There is a play button in the top left hand corner which lets you look at your videos and in the top right hand corner there is a picture of a bin which lets you delete your video. The arrows let you flip through your video library . The plus and negative signs control close ups and long shots. There is a built in USB stick which means you can upload your videos quickly to your computer.

In our lesson we were looking at a much more advanced camera.[Sony NX5 digital HD camera] One difference  between the filp and this camera was when going outside the light would change. with a flip this would not be a problem but with the sony NX5 it was. The sony NX5 is not able to register light change so you had to help with that. To get the right picture whilst changing light you need to hold out a white sheet of paper and zoom in on it so the paper took up the hole screen and press this tiny button on the side of the camera which adjusts to the whiteness. Once you have done this and the white  piece of paper looks a normal colour you know the camera has adjusted to the light and you can be sure to have accurate footage that is the right colour to match the room you are in.

To zoom in on this camera you can use the lens. You turn the lens left or right which lets you zoom in or out. You can also use the analogue stick which is a set speed when zooming in or out. With the lens the faster you turn it the quicker you zoom in. We also were taught how to set up a tripod which lets you capture footage which is still. The tripods also let you tilt the camera and move the camera from left to right giving you a nice steady panning shot.

This is all in preparation for filming our openings to a thriller film which i am very excited about!
